In 2013, the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) launched a pilot project for the set-up of a national database on the dosage of paediatric medicines together with the Category A children’s hospitals, the Swiss Society of Paediatrics (SSP), the Swiss Association of Public Health Administration and Hospital Pharmacists (GSASA) and the Swiss Conference of the Cantonal Ministers of Public Health.
The aim of the pilot project was, firstly, to clarify the need, requirements and feasibility of such a database. Secondly, a national consensus had to be reached on the content, design, structure and operation of a national database for dosing medicinal products in paediatrics. Thirdly, the project was aimed at preparing the operation of the national database. The pilot project ended in March 2018.
During the pilot project, 100 dosage recommendations for 30 active substances from the fields of infectiology, neonatology and general paediatrics were harmonised. This was only made possible due to the great commitment of everyone involved. In addition to the sponsors of the pilot project, 24 medical specialists and 8 pharmacists from all Category A children’s hospitals were involved.
